Why Crompton Control's services are critical for the Medical Sector

Wakefield-based manufacturing company Crompton Controls has been supporting the medical sector with Building Management Systems (BMS). Installed into hospitals, these systems allow users to control heating, electricity and water more easily.

Crompton Controls is a 100% privately owned British Company that manufactures and supplies high-quality electrical equipment including standard motor starters, components and fully customised complex control solutions to a wide range of industries and market sectors.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Crompton Controls has seen a rise in orders for BMS within the medical sector. BMS is implemented into panels which are then added to the infrastructure of buildings, in order to use controls within the building more efficiently.

However, due to the level of hospitals in need of BMS, non-critical orders for hospitals have been held back whilst others have been completed quickly. Dave Chappell, Sales Director at Crompton Controls, said:

“So far we have completed work for Epsom Hospital, through our partners, and Sancta Maria in Wales. However, others have been pushed back as non-critical due to the volume of enquiries we have received.”

Many of these enquiries have been made to refurbish the hospitals or used when the facility is being extended.

The firm has also been supporting other critical sectors during the pandemic, by supplying control panels and equipment to the Water, Oil, and Gas industry. Talking about how this feels to be able to support the community during difficult times, Dave added:

“There is a great feeling of pride, being able to help during such difficult times when even being out of the house is a risk. We are enabling life-saving facilities to be open and running quickly, all whilst doing it on a reduced crew and still meeting demands.”

Crompton Controls have stayed open during the pandemic to support these sectors, whilst sticking to the Government's guidelines on social distancing. The UK manufacturing firm is able to offer bespoke manufacturing solutions for almost every motor control system.

The Big MD Handover

We would like to announce a change at the top at Crompton Controls.

After five successful years as Managing Director Dean Sweeney has decided to step down from the big seat into a support role for the business and Dave Chappell picks up the gauntlet as the new MD of Crompton Controls. Dean continues as a board member and will provide valuable experience and resource to Dave and the team.

Dave will lead the company forward after the brilliant work he has done over many years and in particular during his time as Sales Director where great improvements have been made in all areas.

Crompton Controls is privileged to have two great people striving every day to improve the business and we say a big well done to Dean for all his efforts, success and support and at the same time we wish Dave every success in making the MDs position his own and taking the company to yet further heights.

MIY Expo Exhibitor Spotlight: Crompton Controls – 120 Years of “Minimum Fuss and Maximum Care”

As part of Made in Yorkshire’s Exhibitor Spotlight series, a member of the team from MIY recently caught up with our Managing Director, David Chappell, to ask a few quick questions about what drives us, what we’ve achieved recently, and what exciting things we’ve got coming up next.

We’ll be there at the MIY Expo to discuss our capabilities here at Crompton Controls with anyone interested in finding out more. But for now, here’s what Dave had to say during his catch up with MIY…

1. In one sentence – what does Crompton Controls do best?

2. What’s the driving mission or purpose behind Crompton Controls right now?

Our core value is to be as easy to deal with as possible. From design and manufacture through to distribution and support, we approach every interaction with a professional yet personal touch. As Dave puts it, our aim is simple:

“To look after your business with minimum fuss and maximum care.”

That ethos runs right through everything we do – from technical guidance and product selection to bespoke manufacturing and ongoing support.

3. What’s been the biggest milestone over the past 12 months?

Over the past year, we’ve experienced significant growth. We’ve expanded into new sectors, introduced new product lines, and invested heavily in staff training and development. It’s been about much more than increased output – we’ve strengthened our team and broadened our capabilities to support evolving customer needs.

4. Any exciting developments on the horizon?

We’ll soon be unveiling a UK-first – the latest wire preparation machine. It’s a major step forward in terms of automation and precision, and part of our ongoing investment in innovation and process improvement.

5. Tell us something surprising or little-known about Crompton Controls.

We can trace our roots back over 120 years to Rookes Evelyn Bell Crompton, a pioneering 19th-century electrical engineer. He played a vital role in introducing some of the world’s first public electricity supplies – and brought lighting networks to Australia and India. His legacy of innovation and ambition still drives us today.

The Heart of Yorkshire education group Apprenticeship Awards 2025 gave us the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our apprentices, along with Tutors, assessors, and other employers. Excellent links with Industry, businesses and the wider community has a positive influence, helping us design and develop industry and commerce skills.

From shop floor to industry leader: Crompton Control's MD 30 years in the making

A story of ambition, determination and continuous learning. In manufacturing working your way up from shop floor to Managing Director isn't uncommon, one of the many reasons individuals should consider a role in UK industry. For Crompton Controls Dave Chappell, starting out on the shop floor and rising to the head of the company, whilst being part of the company for his entire working life - his story is nothing short of inspiring. With Crompton Controls Factory tourcoming up, Made in Yorkshire look back through Dave's career and why this manufacturing firm is worth seeing for yourself.

Crompton Controls, formerly part of Brook Motors, manufactures motor controls, BMS panels and other electrical components. The company traces its heritage back to Rookes Evelyn Bell Crompton - who was responsible for the world's first public electricity supply as well as introducing lighting networks to Australia and India. “Every electric motor needs a controller, 10,000,000 low voltage electric motors are in use every day and that's what we control from our little site in Wakefield everyday”, proudly stated by Dave Chappell, Managing Director at Crompton Controls, as a guest on the Finest Hour Podcast by Made in Group.

Celebrating their 120th anniversary in 2024, the company is set to host a factory tour with Made in Yorkshire on 13th June. Members of Made in Yorkshire are set to attend and will be taken on a guided tour from design, manufacture to the distribution of electrical applications. From pioneering industrial electric motors, to introducing cutting edge automation and smart control solutions, the company has also eliminated their plastic waste to drive sustainability.

Starting out at Crompton Controls at just 19 years old, Dave took every learning opportunity he could in order to achieve his ambition of being an industry leader. “I have always been ambitious, I wanted to move higher and prove myself”. Dave continued. In order to achieve this, Dave moved through each department of the business in order to learn every aspect and vital experiences to lead. “I class the 30 years as my apprenticeship” Dave said, whilst he discussed the importance of learning outside of work hours to achieve one's goal.

Whilst ambition can lead to challenges along the way, staying loyal to a company is important to achieve success. Dave said: “I grew up in this business, and having colleagues who are friends outside of work builds a sense of loyalty.” However sometimes, when life happens unexpectedly, it is easy to feel that the ‘grass may be greener on the other side’. Dave talks about how some years ago, he did feel the need to move on from Crompton Controls due to “frustration and different priorities when growing.” The new opportunity he undertook is what gave him the chance to prove he had the skills to be a leader, which ultimately took him back to his passion - manufacturing at Crompton Controls.

Now as Managing Director, Dave believes employees are central to the success of Crompton Controls. He said: “Their loyalty, Innovation, and dedication drive us forward.” Jayne Jaques, Purchasing Manager at Crompton Controls, has worked for the business for 37 years. She highlighted the company’s supportive and nurturing environment including opportunities for personal growth and development. Jayne has also been with company for most of her life because of the sense of belonging and appreciation.

Crompton Controls Host Busy Breakfast Morning

Made in Yorkshires latest breakfast event was hosted by Crompton Controls on Thursday 12th of October at their Monckton Road Industrial Estate in Wakefield.

Crompton Controls manufactures and supplies high quality electrical equipment including standard motor starters, components and fully customised complex control solutions to a wide range of industries and market sectors. They have continued to innovate and by nature responds to customer demand. This approach coupled with long experience and true expertise in its chosen fields, a strong in house technical capability and an increasingly professional sales and marketing strategy enables the business stay ahead of its competitors, be inventive and very focussed on customer service.

We welcomed 25 guests to Crompton Control's Wakefield factory, and tasked them with a different type of networking. All members numbered their business cards 1, 2, 3 and swapped with people they wanted to speak to. This created three five minute mini meetings where members discussed whatever they liked.

Nigel Hall gave us a short presentation of Crompton Control's impressive history and current work. We were then treated to a factory tour, and a practical demonstration of the Drenched product with Phil Ledson.

Nigel Hall said, 'It's been a great day, I've met a lot of new people, potential new businesses to work with, and we'd happily do it again. What Made in Yorkshire are doing is very important for business. Yes you can do a bit over the phone, but you can't network over the phone really. I'm always a face to face person, and companies need to talk face to face.'
